The Secondary School Visual Art Exhibition, unveiled in March, was a great success and received support from the whole ISD community! Our young artists from Grade 6 to Grade 12 presented their artwork and learning journeys to an audience of parents, teachers, and peers. The exhibit space in art gallery provided a platform for these talented students where they showcased their creations and engaged with the community.

IBDP Visual Arts Exhibition

IBDP่ง†่ง‰่‰บๆœฏๅฑ•

Our two IBDP students, Emily K. and Alina L., had their final Grade 12 exhibition. Each student is required to curate a body of artwork that are coherent with each other. Alina created a new race of people called the Sea People and described the biological life cycle of these people in her work. Emily explored different aspects of identity in her work.

There is also a specially curated exhibition of works from Grade 6 to Grade 12 students curated by our two Grade 11 students. Curating practice is part of the IB Visual Arts course. They began with looking through a large selection of work and then looked for patterns and themes in the work and developing ideas that would help the viewers understand the work better. Once they made their final selection, they framed the work and wrote up a curatorial rationale.

They chose a title of “Fauvism in Physiognomy” – Fauvism is an early 20th century art movement where a group of artists explored color in an unnatural way. Their exhibition explores how this approach can bring surprising results when applied to portraits, often expressing a deeper emotion or feeling from the subject.

Exploding the Canvas

Grade 9 and Grade 10 students have been working since December last year on a 3D painting project called “Exploding the Canvas” where they were required to create a painting that breaks the mold of the traditional rectangular canvas and explore 3D elements.

Students used a laser cutting process with plywood and glue to construct their artworks and then painted them with acrylic paint. It was a lengthy process due to the learning curve of the laser cutting process. Thanks to the support and guidance by the Makerspace Tech Teacher, Mr. Frank Thong, the students learned many skills in this project. They learned the design cycle, starting with miniature models and working toward a bigger piece, reflecting and refining their designs throughout the process. They also learned how to paint with acrylic paint to create 3D illusion elements in their work.

At ISD, the weekly art classes begin in Preschool and continue through to Grade 5, equipping students with the ability to create and develop their artistic expression through a variety of media. Visual Arts courses are offered as electives in grades 6-10. For Grades 11 and 12, ISD offers the IBDP Visual Arts course, a rigorous two-year programme that encourages students to actively explore the visual arts within and across a variety of local, regional, national, international, and intercultural contexts.
