Artificial Intelligence (AI) is radically reshaping our lives, work and learning, necessitating a fundamental rethinking of the core of education. Currently, AI is ushering in sweeping changes, compelling us to break free from existing frameworks and redefine the essence of “teaching and learning” from the ground up. More significantly, we should proactively consider how to help people thrive and find fulfillment in the AI era, rather than merely adapting to technological changes. This undoubtedly presents unprecedented challenges for schools and the education sector, but also holds immense opportunities worthy of our collective exploration.

Conversations in education regarding AI are largely at the wrong level. AI is a paradigm shift that will transform every aspect of how we live, work, teach, and learn.

Going back 25+ years to the advent of 1-1 MacBook in international education, innovative international schools in Asia were the early adopters in Asia and globally to adopt 1-1 MacBook programs. Through trial and error, we led the way.

We learned that we could replace some traditional classroom activities with better ones and enhance some learning activities to make learning more engaging using technology (this later was developed into the widely recognized SAMR Model). We also learned that technology only sometimes makes learning easier, faster, or better. We also struggled as we waited for the educational institutions we belonged to (IB, AP, A-Levels) to adapt and catch up (our IBDP students still have to handwrite exams, and thatโ€™s inexcusable).

I remember in primary school when ancient Mrs. Scobbie, my math teacher, insisted on me learning how to use the slide rule to perform math calculations and refused calculators, all in the name of โ€œeducation.โ€ I still canโ€™t understand why, except for her misguided hold on the past. From our studentsโ€™ eyes, AI can replace the need to take notes, the need to research, the need to learn PowerPoint, the need to write, the need to take multiple choice exams, and much more. Why is learning any of this important to them? I was 10 when Mrs Scobbie attempted a useless educational outcome with the slide rule – we are doing the same thing now with trying to limit AI. However, If we donโ€™t reinvent and re-vision, we will be in huge trouble 25 years from now.

Some will adamantly attempt to ban AI. This approach is as misguided as, for example, the prohibition of libraries in some schools in Florida. Another approach is punitive and control-based. โ€œLetโ€™s use AI to catch the AI cheaters,โ€ is the thinking. Teachers can set projects and process the finished product through an AI detector to โ€œcatch the terrible and lazy students cheating with AI.โ€ It is as if students canโ€™t figure this out and beat us at this, turning education into a game of giant AI Cat and Mouse rather than learning.

  • What is the minimum skill and knowledge needed for students to use AI so future generations intelligently wonโ€™t be functionally uneducated but AI handy? We already see too much screen time and insufficient learning with 1-1 programs.
  • What does student learning look like in an AI world? What does it look like for 3-year-olds? Nine year olds? 15 year olds?
  • In the eyes of our youngest learners, as they grow up with AI, what is relevant to them in education in an AI world causes them to cringe (think slide rulers)๏ผŸ
  • How can AI be used to reduce screen time, not increase it?
  • Perhaps most importantly, what does it mean to be human in an AI world? How do we educate our children to be more human?
