Focusing | AI In Education – A Quick Think

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is radically reshaping our lives, work and learning, necessitating a fundamental rethinking of the core of education. As our Head of School, Mark McCallum, pointed out in his article “AI In Education – A Quick Think”, the rapid advances in educational technology over the past 25 years have unveiled the boundless possibilities that AI holds for transforming this domain.

Currently, AI is ushering in sweeping changes, compelling us to break free from existing frameworks and redefine the essence of “teaching and learning” from the ground up. More significantly, we should proactively consider how to help people thrive and find fulfillment in the AI era, rather than merely adapting to technological changes. This undoubtedly presents unprecedented challenges for schools and the education sector, but also holds immense opportunities worthy of our collective exploration.

当下，AI正在掀起一场变革，我们必须跳出既有框框，从根本上重新定义”教与学”的内涵。更为关键的是，我们应积极思考如何让人类在AI时代中找到价值和意义，而不是被动地适应技术的变革。这无疑为学校以及整个教育领域带来前所未有的挑战，但同时也蕴含着无穷的机遇，值得我们共同去讨论与探索。

We learned that we could replace some traditional classroom activities with better ones and enhance some learning activities to make learning more engaging using technology (this later was developed into the widely recognized SAMR Model). We also learned that technology only sometimes makes learning easier, faster, or better. We also struggled as we waited for the educational institutions we belonged to (IB, AP, A-Levels) to adapt and catch up (our IBDP students still have to handwrite exams, and that’s inexcusable).

I remember in primary school when ancient Mrs. Scobbie, my math teacher, insisted on me learning how to use the slide rule to perform math calculations and refused calculators, all in the name of “education.” I still can’t understand why, except for her misguided hold on the past. From our students’ eyes, AI can replace the need to take notes, the need to research, the need to learn PowerPoint, the need to write, the need to take multiple choice exams, and much more. Why is learning any of this important to them? I was 10 when Mrs Scobbie attempted a useless educational outcome with the slide rule – we are doing the same thing now with trying to limit AI. However, If we don’t reinvent and re-vision, we will be in huge trouble 25 years from now.

Some will adamantly attempt to ban AI. This approach is as misguided as, for example, the prohibition of libraries in some schools in Florida. Another approach is punitive and control-based. “Let’s use AI to catch the AI cheaters,” is the thinking. Teachers can set projects and process the finished product through an AI detector to “catch the terrible and lazy students cheating with AI.” It is as if students can’t figure this out and beat us at this, turning education into a game of giant AI Cat and Mouse rather than learning.

Even if we look at how AI can improve teaching, we spend much time adapting AI to today’s version of “modern learning.” We are clipping AI’s wings so we don’t have to change how we do things or even consider how irrelevant many things we do now will soon be in the future.

Yet, in reality, AI has changed and will change everything. Change will accelerate at a pace that we are all uncomfortable with. Pandora is out of the box.

We are still waiting for the esteemed educational institutions we follow to catch up on laptop integration. How will they fare in the pace of AI integration? Why has it taken 25 years, and we still don’t see online exams for most exam boards? How fast will exam boards adapt to AI? For example, how relevant is the IBDP Extended Essay 5-hour teacher supervision rule in the AI age when teachers are forced to focus on the end product more than the process instead of participating in learning along the way with their EE students? Teachers are left to “navigate AI themselves” while working with old thinking, old policies and outdated procedures.

Instead, I propose that we start the unthinkable task of asking big questions. Questions that need addressing immediately include:

• What skills and knowledge are needed to be a productive member of society in an AI world? What does an AI-integrated actually society look like?
• What is the minimum skill and knowledge needed for students to use AI so future generations intelligently won’t be functionally uneducated but AI handy? We already see too much screen time and insufficient learning with 1-1 programs.
• What does student learning look like in an AI world? What does it look like for 3-year-olds? Nine year olds? 15 year olds?
• In the eyes of our youngest learners, as they grow up with AI, what is relevant to them in education in an AI world causes them to cringe (think slide rulers)？
• How can AI be used to reduce screen time, not increase it?
• Perhaps most importantly, what does it mean to be human in an AI world? How do we educate our children to be more human?

• 如何利用AI技术来减少，而非增加学生的屏幕使用时间?最关键的是，在AI世界中，何为“人之本真”？我们应如何教育孩子们成为更加“人性化”的个体?

대신, 우리는 생각지도 못한 큰 질문들을 던지는 작업을 시작할 것을 제안합니다. 즉시 해결해야 할 질문들은 다음과 같습니다:

• 인공지능 세상에서 생산적인 사회 구성원이 되기 위해 어떤 기술과 지식이 필요합니까? 인공지능으로 통합된 사회는 실제로 어떻게 생겼습니까?
• 학생들이 인공지능을 사용하는 데 필요한 최소한의 기술과 지식은 무엇인가요? 우리는 이미 1-1 프로그램에서 너무 많은 스크린 시간과 불충분한 학습을 보고 있습니다.
• 인공지능 세상에서 학생 학습은 어떻게 생겼나요? 3살 아이들에게는 어떻게 생겼나요? 9살 아이들? 15살 아이들?

If we want to get real and complicated with this, here are a few more significant questions to answer:

• How will future generations be gainfully employed, earn an income, and meaningfully occupy their time when so many routine tasks are replaced, and fewer employees can do more with AI?
• What happens if we let profit-driven technology companies direct the future of AI in education? Where shareholders are more important than stakeholders. We already are seeing a global mental health catastrophe in social media.
• What happens when AI is developed by the “wrong hands”? What are the new cyber safety rules needed to remain safe in this brave new world?

如果我们想把这个问题变得更真实、更复杂，那么以下是几个更重要的问题:

Without a re-vision, learning will continue to disintegrate into a dystopian future where children put on giant goggles and disconnect from humanity while shareholders get rich.

Currently, most educators are on the sidelines with no knowledge about how the world is changing around them. A few others are acting in fear or without inspiration, trying to control AI. That’s not going to work either. Others are looking at leveraging AI through SAMR, which is noble, but if we look at the laptop example, we already know where that will lead. Yet almost nobody, I would argue, even accepts that these are all old paradigms.

A recent World Economic Forum (WEF) Insight Report (April 2024) entitled Shaping the Future of Learning: The Role of AI in Education 4.0 can be summarized with the following points below. I would argue these are the exact same points that were raised with the Laptop Revolution 25 years ago:

We have to start from scratch, giving our best attempt to the questions “What does it mean to be human in an AI world?” and “How can humans thrive with purpose and meaning in an AI world?”

Our students are growing up with a different future than we can imagine, and we are responsible for framing the big questions and seeking answers and solutions as quickly as possible. AI can be a source of positive change if we start with the right questions and have clear intentions of envisioning a positive future rather than getting swept into an extension of what began 25 years ago with the advent of laptops and devices in education.

Food for thought: I have always liked the IBDP Visual Arts Portfolio Process Journal and wonder if the future of learning could be in the process rather than the product. Rather than grading the beautiful artwork, we look at the ~35 versions and iterations and process the development and thinking behind the end product.
