Students have easy access to connect with the outside world and expand their learning experiences in the age of technology. Field trips allow students to step out of the classroom and engage with the real world, promoting a profound integration of academic knowledge and first-hand experiences.
In Grade 9 Mandarin class, our students are now studying traditional Chinese classics, “Tribute to Yueyang Tower” and “The Roadside Hut of the Old Drunkard.” Based on their initial comprehension of the scriptures, they depicted the ancient architectures through artistic forms such as painting. The teacher also arranged for the students to visit the Keyuan Museum, a nearby ancient architectural landmark, to supplement their understanding of the articles.
在9年级的中文课堂上,同学们正在学习古文《岳阳楼记》与《醉翁亭记》。他们根据对文章的初步理解,用绘画等艺术形式表现自己对诗词的理解。老师组织学生们就近参观与诗词中相似的古代建筑–可园博物馆,以此提升对文章意境的解读。
Returning to the classroom with their newfound insights from the museum visit, they curated a collection of photographs taken during their field trip and organized a photography exhibition. They combined their interpretations of the literary and the authors’ backgrounds into these photos, enhancing their learning experience.
Grade 12 Biology students went on a field trip to deepen their knowledge of ecology. Prior to the trip, the students collaborated to plan and execute the investigation, conducting background research on the methodology and creating their own variables to evaluate. The students went to the park armed with a 1m x 1m quadrant, a 15-meter string, a trundle wheel, a soil moisture sensor, and pH paper. They worked in groups to complete assessments at regular 5-meter intervals starting from the park’s lake.1

Ana D., a Grade 12 student, shared that in terms of the benefits of the field trip for her IBDP Biology course, it specifically increased her comprehension of quadrant sampling because they had to do all of the steps on their own. This hands-on experience improved her understanding of the subject and aided her overall learning in the IBDP Biology curriculum.

IBDP Visual Arts students went on a field trip to the M+ Museum in West Kowloon, Hong Kong. They went to the M+ Sigg Collection: Another Story, where they were immersed in contemporary Chinese art styles and practices. They also explored art exhibitions highlighting Chinese art, fashion, and popular culture.
11th graders got the opportunity to appreciate the artworks they chose as research subjects during a field trip to the M+ Museum, getting insights into how they were presented within a larger context. Meanwhile, 12th graders focused on researching and mastering various types of exhibition layout and display strategies in preparation for their approaching final exhibition in March 2024.
