ISD is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), making it one of only 65 WASC-accredited international schools in all of China. World-class universities including Stanford University, Pepperdine University and University of Southern California are accredited by WASC.International School of Dongguan is the first IB World School in Dongguan authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) in May 2015 to deliver the IB Diploma Program (IBDP) to Grade 11 and Grade 12 students. A student who earns the IB diploma is recognized as having completed one of the most rigorous programs. The IB diploma is a steppingstone to study at dream universities.

ISD is a member of two regional professional organizations for international schools: the Association of Chinese and Mongolian International Schools (ACAMIS) and the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS). These associations require high qualifications of the International Schools, which guarantee ISD “Inspire, Succeed, Dreams.”

International School Services(ISS) assists ISD in an advisory capacity to implement a quality international school program for students. To date, ISS has managed over 100 sponsored schools in more than 40 countries and currently works with more than 300 international schools.

What curriculum does ISD use?ISD使用什么课程体系？

From Early Childhood to Grade 10, ISD uses an inquiry-based curriculum in all disciplines. ISD utilizes the Common Core Standards for English and Mathematics, NGSS for Science, Aero Standards for teaching of Social Studies.The International Baccalaureate’s Diploma Programme is delivered to students in grades 11 and 12. The IBDP curriculum consists of the core subjects in six subject groups. A research focus Extended Essay, the study of the Theory of Knowledge, and Creativity, Activity, and Service are the core of the program. Six subject groups include studies in language and literature; language acquisition; individuals and societies; sciences; mathematics; and the arts.

ISD offers a Pre-Kindergarten (PK) and Junior Kindergarten (JK) program with small class sizes to allow for a supportive learning environment.The programs in PK support a wide range of learning experiences to stimulate inquiry, investigation, independence, socialization, risk-taking, decision-making and development of empathy and cultural awareness. The PK classroom provides focus on fostering independence, problem solving strategies, communication and collaboration skills and pre-reading and number concepts.

In JK, ISD encourages learning through play and use methodologies that foster learning in children. This classroom provides experiences in pre-reading, writing and math. In the integrated curriculum in JK, ISD provides learning experiences in science, social studies, the arts, literacy, and math.

The Elementary School Program (SK – Grade 5) begins in SK and focuses on developing a language skills foundation with rich and varied reading initiatives and skill development for writing acquisition integrated within all the core subject areas encompassing reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and science. Class sizes are small as to allow for all students to be truly known as learners. As a graduated program with increasing complex applications, the elementary school curriculum forms the building blocks of education at all grade levels. Emphasis on demonstrating language acquisition, developing complex thinking strategies, and problem solving and application to the world around them are emphasized at each grade level.

Currently, ISD have an impressive teacher – student ratio of 1:5. The smaller class sizes allow for a supportive learning environment. ISD aims to limit class sizes to:• Early Childhood (PK and JK): 18 students. Each classroom has a homeroom teacher and a teaching assistant.

• Elementary School (SK-G5): 20 students. Each classroom has a homeroom teacher and a teaching assistant.

• Secondary School (G6-G12) : 25 students. There are subject’s teachers and teacher advisors in Secondary School.

ISD faculty are screened through the services of ISS, Princeton, New Jersey. All faculty meet high standards in their qualifications and bring with them a great amount of teaching knowledge and experience. 14 teachers have over 15 years of teaching experience, and 85% teachers hold more than 5 years of teaching experience. All professional teaching faculty hold their bachelor’s degrees and above, and 67% of them hold their masters or doctoral degrees. 5 teaching faculty hold doctorate degrees.

• Early Childhood (PK and JK): PK and JK students share iPads in class depending on teachers. The distribution is managed by teacher for EC.

• Elementary School (Sk-G5): ISD has 1:1 iPad program in ES. The school provides iPads for all ES students in class.

• Secondary School (G6-G12) : ISD implements Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) in Secondary Schools, allowing students to bring their own devices to schools for learning activities. The current standard device is MacBook from Apple.

ELL program

ISD provides a comprehensive ELL program to ensure ISD students have access and can actively participate in the world-class educational experience regardless of what experiences and abilities they have in English. ELL teachers work with students in small groups and provide instructional strategies that will prepare students for English in rigorous academic settings. Additionally, ELL teachers co-plan and co-teach with the subject teachers to support the needs of all students in the classroom. They work in the classes using strategies where students will learn the language and the content together.

ISD also provides individual learning support for students to exploit the potential of each child. Through support students’ in-class general learning, providing in-class scaffolding and differentiating learning to accommodate every student，giving regular individual work and small group instruction, SEN teacher helps students devise learning strategies to learn better and faster.

ISD Counseling team brings expertise and experience to help students succeed in their academic goals and support social and emotional growth. Counsellor helps students learn effective interpersonal skills, how to understand and respect themselves and others, and how to set and achieve personal goals. All ISD Secondary Students participate in Advisory Program, which provides a supportive and nurturing learning opportunity. Teacher Advisors and their student Advisees meet twice a week to discuss a wide range of topics. Additionally, ISD Counseling team provides College & Career Counseling Services, working with each student and their parents and teachers to map an individualized path and set the stage for success.

What is the homework policy at ISD?

ISD has researched best practices regarding homework. As a result, each division (elementary, middle, and high school) has developed homework policies suited to those age groups.

There is no homework for EC students, but it requires parents’ involvement. From elementary school to Middle school, homework will approximately 10mins per night per grade level. For example, grade 1×10 = 10 minutes, grade 2 x10 minutes = 20 minutes etc. Students in high school, grades 9 through 12, will have between 90 and 120 minutes of homework, which is depending on their course load.

The goal is to create balanced classrooms, which put every student in the best possible position to be successful. ISD carefully reviews the application documents submitted and consider the results of the assessment and interview. ISD balances gender, nationality, new and returning student status. The goal is to balance each classroom as much as possible.

How does ISD provide various activities for students?

ISD ASAs are designed to introduce our students to new opportunities, explore new areas of interest, and develop skills beyond the classroom. There are over 90 ASAs, including Creative Craft Work, Golf, Baking, Drama Club, VEX IQ Robotics, Frisbee Club and Model United Nations (MUN). Moreover, there are ASAs that are more academic focused. These ASAs include Creative Writing and Tutoring Clinic. For example, Model United Nations (MUN) is an educational simulation and/or academic activity in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations.

ISD的课后活动为学生提供全新机会，使得他们能在课堂之外自由探索感兴趣的新领域，提升自身技能。ISD提供超过90种课程选项，其中包括创意手工课、高尔夫、烘培课、舞台剧、 VEX IQ 机器人、飞盘俱乐部以及模拟联合国（MUN）等。同时，课后活动还提供侧重于学术支持的课程，如创意写作和学习辅导等。例如：MUN是一项学术模拟教育活动。通过模拟召开联合国大会，学生可以进一步了解外交政策，国际关系和联合国的运作等知识。

ISD ASA는 학생들에게 새로운 기회를 소개하고 새로운 관심 분야를 탐색하며 교실 밖에서 기술을 개발하도록 고안되었습니다. ISD provides SAT for ISD students, which save their time for going to Hong Kong SAR to take the test. Besides, ISD is the only one accredited testing center offers TOEFL, GRE and IELTS to the public in Dongguan. ISD believes communication and partnership between home and school is important for students’ growth. Therefore, ISD have different channels to ensure effective home-school partnership.

At ISD Seesaw is the main communication tool for the Early Childhood (Pre-k and JK) and Elementary School (SK to G5). Teachers use Seesaw to communicate with parents and showcase what students are learning in school with their families. For Secondary School (G6-G12), teachers utilize ManageBac as an online planning, assessment, and reporting platform. Parents can view child(ren)’s academic progress, check child(ren)’s calendar and view teachers’ assignment and feedback.

In PSTC, personalized meetings with parents give students and teachers an opportunity to review student work and discuss collaborate on actions the student, teacher, and parents can take to improve student performance.
